Match 10: Sounders vs Dallas Sat. May 19 @Fado 4pm!

Come preparty with us at Fado on Saturday, May 19th! Watch the Sounders continue to move up the table! We will also be recognizing International Day to End Homophobia Day!

Dallas is currently holding down the number one spot in all of the most recent power rankings and has the record to match. The Toros have put together a very impressive start to the 2013 campaign with 24 points from 11 matches and a very Sounders-esque 2.18 PPM. Brek Shea who?

Saturday will be a homecoming of sorts for Shoreline/UW product George John who at one point was thought to be on his way to Europe. With our three headed monster comprised of Lamar, Eddie, and Oba giving him fits all day I can only imagine he’ll wished he never left Frisco or better yet, had left the states altogether.

Sounders should be at full strength with a week between matches for those that didn’t participate in Sundays reserve match against Orlando City, and possibly the strongest they’ve been all year. Things are finally coming together for our boys, as always see you at the stadium cheering them on. There’s a chance of showers but that’s never deterred us from showing 100% support. Lets get crazy!

FADO. 4pm. Drink specials, and GFC beers on tap. If you’re able bodied and a marathon drinker show up early (11:45am early) and watch the Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. If not, see you at 4 and we can recap the match.

The historic Admiral Theater in beautiful West Seattle is also showing the match, doors at 10:30 first come first serve. They are asking that you bring a kid friendly donation to the West Seattle Food Bank in exchange for admittance. (GFC is not involved with this event, just thought it would be a good place to plug it for them. NB)

SSFC Vs. San Jose Earthquakes 5/11 preparty at Fado 915am!

Well, it’s been a month since we’ve seen our rave green warriors at home but welcome them back on a 4 game unbeaten streak. We may not be up to full strength yet but we can feel it coming, as can our opponents on the upcoming schedule. I’ll include San Jose on that list, although they’re working back from some absences as well. Saturday will be the first match back for both Steven “Captain Floppy” Lenhart and Alan “Slippery Tongue” Gordon from their own respective suspensions. We won’t get in to the reasons for their bans, as we all make mistakes.. nevermind. No one likes San Jose anyways! Lenhart tried to mame a defenseless Chivas player, and Gordon used a no-no word on national television. Lets just say that SJ is far from the epitome of classiness.

We met them earlier in the season, falling 1-0 down at Buck Shaw on a 46′ strike from Wondolowski. It’s our turn to repay the favor.

As always GFC will be prefunk’n down @ Fado - 9:15 until the march to the match. If you’re not familar, Fado is located at 801 1st Ave Seattle, WA 98104. Memberships will be available for pickup/purchase. GFC Members get discounts on drinks, including Mimosa specials. FA Final Cup action between Manchester City and Wigan starts @ 9:15 so show up early and snag a booth.

Our Civic Ticket Partner this week is: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound!

BBBSPS provides children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. It is our vision that all children achieve success in life, and hold ourselves accountable for each child in our program achieving higher aspirations and confidence, avoiding risky behaviors, and succeeding in school.

Heck Yeah! Go Sounders! EBFG! Beat it SJ, you’re goin’ DOWN

In a recent report from Trust for America’s Health titled F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future 2012, studies forecast for the first time what obesity rates will look like in Washington State by the year 2030. According to the data, 26.5 percent of adults are currently obese, while obesity rates are projected to reach 55.5 percent of the state population by 2030.

Children have become heavier as well. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Recent statistics indicate more than one third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese.

The F as in Fat study shows that Washington State could prevent obesity-related diseases and dramatically reduce health care costs by encouraging residents to decrease their average body mass index by five percent.

“The best way to stay healthy is through exercise and choosing the right foods to feed your body,” says Sounders FC forward David Estrada. “We get to share our own fitness tips and healthy snack ideas at these Family Fitness Nights. It’s a great way to connect with local families and encourage them to choose healthier lifestyles.”

SUBWAY® restaurants of Seattle continues to partner with Seattle Sounders FC to provide fitness and health programming in the Seattle/Tacoma area. These two organizations joined forces to reach more than 1,000 students and their family members last year.

Kind of a late match for a Sunday.. Crazy MLS schedulers.. They must assume we’re all in our early 20′s or something!

The last time we travelled to the Home Depot Center we were fresh off of a miracle goal from Mario Martinez sending us to the West Semi-finals in 2012′s playoffs. Hopes were high, MLS final in Seattle was in our sights, stars were alligning, championship.

(Cue cartoon horn) Waaah waaah. We would have been fine giving up a goal to the Gals at home, with the second leg back in Seattle. Maybe even two, but for the second year in a row we dug ourselves an insurmountable hole and fell out of the playoffs. We made a valiant effort in the second leg, scoring two and having another waived off when Eddie was called offsides (which replays showed was BS). After Robbie Keane and his dumb cartwheel nailed home a PK in the 68th minute we were more or less cooked.

Things have changed for both sides as Beckham left LA for Paris and Fredy left us for Colombia. We’ve restocked the cupboard with our signing of Oba and LA has offered contracts to 2/3rds of EPL players over 35. Must work for them being that they’ve hoisted the last two MLS cups, I guess I just prefer our players aren’t elligible for AARP discounts.

We’ll be watching the match at Auto Battery located @ 1009 E Union St Seattle, WA 98122. Drink specials for GFC members and our charity beers on tap. We’ll also be handing out raffle tix for each purchase of our beer with the opportunity to win a SSFC beer light. Show up early to make sure you get a seat, I recommend the veggie dog from Po Dog while you’re there.. And that’s coming from a carnivore!

EBFG – Sounders till’ I die – HEY!

2013 Cascadia Soccer Supporter Group Beer Fest

When: Sunday, May 19 2013 from 12pm to 4pm

Where: The Pine Box at 1600 Melrose Ave Seattle, WA 98122

Cascadia is known for its passion for beer and for soccer. Rival supporters from Portland and Seattle have for a rare moment put the rivalry aside for the shared love of beer. Come celebrate Seattle Beer Week with us at the Pine Box and try beers from Portland and Seattle supporter groups. Timbers Army and Gorilla FC will be represented by beers brewed for them by local breweries. The Vancouver Southsiders have been invited to the event as well, though their beer is still in the developmental stages. It will be a celebration of soccer, and the beverages we like to drink! While the groups differ in who they support on the field, we all share a love of beer. Here is a chance to meet members from both supporter groups and the supporters behind the beer.

The lineup (with potentially more to be added) is:

Widmer Brothers Brewing, Green & Gold Kolsch(Portland,Oregon)

Green & Gold Kölsch is the creation of longtime Timbers Army member Abram Goldman-Armstrong, who won the “Full 90” category of the 2012 Timbers Army Homebrew Competition with this recipe. Goldman-Armstrong has been brewing variations of the Kölsch style since becoming acquainted with it in its native Cologne, Germany, while attending the 2006 World Cup; he entered his latest version of the style into the competition, which incorporated his homegrown Hallertauer hops. Malts: Two-Row Pale Hops: ABV: 5.2%, IBU: 35

Dicks Brewing Co.: Au GFC (Centralia, Washington)

Dick’s Brewing Company is also working with GFC and they have produced the Dick’s Au GFC. The Dick’s Au GFC is a Golden Ale brewed with American Two Row, Malted Wheat, and Magnum hops. The Au GFC is dry hopped with 3 distinct varieties; Saaz, Mt. Hood and Tettnanger. The first sip brings refreshing crispness with a slightly sweet malty aftertaste. The dry hop adds a nice floral and herbal backbone to the beer making it a great session beer. Julie Young, Owner and Dave Pendleton, Head Brewer of Dick’s Brewing Company said, “We are very excited working with GFC as we are huge football fans! We love supporting GFC’s charity activities and are happy we can do that through our beer.” ABV: 5.5%, 45 IBU

Lompoc: Kick Axe (Portland, Oregon)

This light, copper-colored beer packs a big floral nose with notes of citrus & pine. The malt delivers mild caramel flavors and the Cascade hops finish with a clean and crisp grapefruit bitterness. Our tribute to the Timber’s Army. A crisp, easy drinking pale ale. Dry hopped in the fermenter with Cascades giving of a huge hop aroma. 5.2% ABV, 40 IBU.

Big Al Brewing Co.: Civ’s White IPA (Seattle, WA)

Big Al Brewing created for Gorilla FC Civ’s White IPA which is made using American Two Row, Malted Wheat, Unmalted Wheat, Oats, and given bitterness and aroma with Nugget and Cascade hops. This beer was designed with balance, flavor, and drinkability in mind. A refreshing wheat beer, with a unique Belgian character, balanced by an assertive bitterness and bright hop aroma and flavor and comes in at 6.0% ABV. Alejandro Brown President/Head Brewer of Big Al Brewing had this to say about the project “We are proud to partner with Gorilla FC who share our passion for Seattle Sounders FC and our commitment to community. We look forward to raising many pints of Civ’s White IPA and funds for local charities while supporting our beloved Sounders with this remarkable organization!” 6.0 ABV, IBU 58

Sat. May 4 at 1230pm @ Autobattery Bar at 1009 E. Union! Sounders vs Philadelphia

May the Fourth be with you – If you’re out of the loop as I am sure some of you are, 5/4 is International Star Wars day. The Union has done their best to cash in on the coincidence, handing out t-shirts, even dressing up Jeff Parke as Han Solo.

They’re gonna need the force to keep Oba from cutting through their defense like a light saber.

Who’s going to cover Yedlin streaking up the sideline at the speed of the Millennium Falcon?

It wasn’t Seb LeToux’s choice to go to the dark side, but now unfortunately he must be destroyed – by a shutout of course.

GFC will be watching the match at partner bar Auto Battery, located at 1009 E Union St Seattle, WA 98122 in Capitol Hill. Come support our boys, drink Civ’s charity beers, have a bite to eat from Po Dog, and if you aren’t already signed up with Gorilla – Membership will be on hand.

Also, if you purchased tix for the USMNT match vs. Panama 6/11 we will have them available to you for pick up. If you’ve yet to purchase them you still can, in the GFC store. We can also sell you more tickets at this viewing party!

We will also begin our contest that Autobattery has donated the NEON SOUNDERS Beer sign. Everyone who shows up, gets a raffle ticket, and for every GFC Beer you drink, you get an additional raffle ticket. This contest will be going on the next 4 away games.

EBFG – Go Sounders!

This Saturday, our boys, SSFC travel to the winter wonderland of Commerce City, CO to take on the mighty Colorado Rapids. New faces, a new playing style, and if I do say so myself an awesome 3rd kit have lifted the Rapids to one spot above our beloved Rave Green warriors in the western conference pecking order. 2nd to last, is well, better than last.

GFC will be watching the match at partner bar Auto Battery, located at 1009 E Union St Seattle, WA 98122 in Capitol Hill. We will have tables reserved in the back as always, with drink specials being offered throughout the match to GFC members. They do have our beers on tap, so have a few.. Beer, it’s good for you!

Wed. May 8th @ 530pm: Sounders @ Sporting Kansas City- GFC watches at Autobattery Bar!

The last time we travelled to KC, we fell at the hands of the home team – the Kansas City Fighting Salazars. I remember it like it was yesterday, booth at 95 Slide, they ran out of glasses, we lost on penalties. We also accumulated 6 yellow cards to their 0. Paulo Nagamura was given a “re-do” on his penalty that more or less sent us home without our 4peat. I would rather our match was reffed by a burlap sack filled with oatmeal than Ricardo Salazar. Damn you Salazar.

GFC will be watching the match at partner bar Auto Battery, located at 1009 E Union St Seattle, WA 98122 in Capitol Hill. Come sing, drink (Civ’s charity beers??) and have a bite to eat while rooting our boys towards victory. Membership will be on hand adding new gorillas to our ranks. Hope to see you all there!

We will also continue our contest that Autobattery has donated the NEON SOUNDERS Beer sign. Everyone who shows up, gets a raffle ticket, and for every GFC Beer you drink, you get an additional raffle ticket. This contest will be going on the next 4 away games.
